Vaccine Survivors

"Zoey"

Will she have another lyme's vaccination...

absolutely not!

A healthy seven year old Afghan Hound female of my breeding who lives in Wisconsin was vaccinated with lyme's vaccine this past February. Shortly thereafter Zoey started having stiffness and pain in her neck. From there it progressed throughout her entire body. This past month she couldn't eat or dring without assistance, had joint swelling, experienced extreme pain when touched, had to be carried downstairs.

The owners vet recommended having her taken to the University of Minnesota Vet School.

When Zoey was taken there, they tested her for any infection and lyme's disease .... both came up negative. They diagnosed her condition as "immune mediated polyarthritis". She was then put on doxycyline and prednisone. The week after this regimen, she experienced a miraculous turnaround. Last week she returned to the University and had her prednisone cut in half.

Zoey has returned to her normal self, eating and drinking and running again in her backyard.

Reaction to the vaccine .... possibly. I have read where reaction to this vaccine can produce symptoms that mimic the disease.

Many vets out there say to use frontline as a deterrent to lyme's disease rather than administering the vaccine. Lots of controversy over the vaccine from what I've read.

Will she have another lyme's vaccination...absolutely not!

After speaking to the breeder, I discovered that his mother does the same thing!

Deceased September 15, 2007

Memorial

Pet's name/species/breed/sex/age:

Xander, canine, German Shephard, M, 3.5 years old (at time of reaction 6 months old)

What 'drug' your pet was given [Rimadyl, ProHeart6, etc.] that resulted in an ADE [adverse drug reaction], and if known, the drug manufacturer name:

Rabies vacc - Merial Imrab3

The approximate date of the event:

Injection done 11/21/2001

The adverse reaction[s] YOU observed and/or became aware of [nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, inability to walk, gastric ulceration, liver failure, kidney damage, death, etc] - please list ALL known and/or suspected symptoms/conditions:

diagnosed with masticatory muscle myositis (autoimmune disease) on 12/07/2001

What State this occurred in:

Arizona

Whether or not your veterinarian informed you of the potential/possible risks/side effects BEFORE dispensing the named drug, stating whether such information was provided verbally and/or in written form:

In fact, my vet assured me the rabies vacc was COMPLETELY safe, even when given during an ear infection.

Where you learned about the potential/possible risks/side effects of the drug [i.e., www.srdogs.com, etc.]:

Online research following diagnosis.

State whether or not you would still have allowed the drug to be given to your pet had you KNOWN of the potential/possible risks/side effects:

I have no choice because it is still a legal requirement in my state. I HATE it, but have no other choice at this time. My state does not allow medical exemptions for rabies vaccination.

The original reason you took your pet to the veterinarian [toenail clipping, vaccinations, injury, any symptoms]:

Due for puppy rabies shot, but asked for his ears to be looked at because they had been bothering him since his last 5-in-1 puppy shot.

BTW, this reaction was NOT reported to the FDA by the vet. I was told the vet had to report it (that I could not do it as a consumer), and she flat out denied the rabies vacc had anything to do with AI disease onset. Said it was merely a coincidence. I know otherwise now. She refused to report it to the FDA. I found the Form 1932A on your site and will be submitting it. I don't know if they will accept it after 3 years, but I figure it's worth a try.

Also, the story of Xander's recovery (still working on getting his immune system back on track) can be found at my website. If you need some kind of testimonial or something, please let me know. My website is http://myweb.cableone.net/bdturner .

Update: On 12/8/04, I did file the FDA ADE (Form 1932A) myself, without my then vet's help. Along with a letter explaining that the 3 year delay was due to the vet's unwillingness to admit the rabies vacc was the cause of the reaction. I received a letter dated 01/25/2005 saying that my submission was accepted.

People NEED to know they don't have to rely on their vet to file an ADE report. They can do it themselves. I would encourage them to do so if their vets are uncooperative.
